You have to think in time

both going back and going forward--so you have to think of what they were doing in the context of their world--and, given the advantage of the 200+ years of progression started by their actions in their context,what would they be thinking now? So, though women were not specifically mentioned nor were they specifically excluded--and the slavery issue clearly was devisive--(enter civil war) so enormous consescions were made. But I would vehemently argue that a women had far more rights in Colonial United States than anywhere esle in the world at the time. But that isn't the question, the question is "why would I think that their interpretation would include non US Citizens" and my answer would be "because that is the way it turned out in the United States in 2005" see pingpong thought above.
