senior chiefs

So, Tom, how about those senior chiefs, anyway? In Suz's books they are the rock-solid unflappable guys who keep their eyes out for the enlisted men and provide wise counsel for the officers.

I somehow see the senior officer as the "dad" of the team who gives the orders and deals with the chain of command, and the senior enlisted man as the "mom", looking out for their guys' welfare. Is that the case? Or am I totally off base? Or does it vary a lot depending on individual personalities?
