I've been reading that the local chapters of the Red Cross all over the country are feeling the pinch of recent natural disasters like Katrina -- Americans, as always, donated generously, but I think perhaps forgot that their local chapters still need to be funded. So I just called to find out how to make out a cheque so that my donation stays in the Bay Area and the lady said to write the name of the chapter right on the cheque -- that way the monies will stay in the local area.
