I mean wouldn't you wonder if Neil really is a screw up? If you didn't have background knowledge, as a reader what is real and what is perception?
Isn't the best conflict internal? How do we not know that Neil isn't a total screw up who must come to grips with telling information but now no one wants to listen becuase he has been so much trouble for so long?
Maybe the Captain is right :)
