Having grown up in California, there is NO way to prepare for an earthquake, unless it's an aftershock. You DON'T know it's coming. But we prepared for it. We knew exactly what we'd do, where we'd go. We had food and other necessities ready.
I think we need to prepare, but not live every day in fear and expectation that "today is the day".
