Tom, Q's please ..about Waller's Hell Week Chapter

Posted by Lisa A on 10/21/2005, 15:04:31
Tom,
I just finished reading Waller’s hell week chapter, thank you for recommending it. He had little details I hadn’t gotten from any other bits and pieces I’ve seen and read. His writing made it seem so real I had sympathy pains. I know you have answered questions about this before, so if I ask what you have already answered I apologize for not remembering.

He said it would probably have killed your Navy career if you hadn’t made it through Bud’s, do you agree with that statement? If so why? Do you think you being the senior officer made you more concerned about the class than other trainees? What responsibilities came with that position? I’m wondering if you felt your rank was a hindrance, help, or non-factor with you surviving Hell Week? Were any of your BUDS instructors under your command later on?

I don’t ever remember hearing about the hallucinations you guys experienced before or things like Greene ending up at mess hall without remembering how he got there. So I was curious after hell week itself how much could you remember about it? Were there things in this chapter that you either never remember or had forgotten?

Also I’m curious did you hide Motrin or give food to classes that went through after you?

You said you don’t worry about the secrecy aspect, I guess that a good thing because your name is everywhere and this was published in 1994. You were operating with Team 4 then right? Did they ask if they could use your names, did you have any say? Did it bother you to have Waller there observing BUDS? Seems he came in handy at least in the instance of the rock in his boot, to cover your visit to the BOQ :)

TY
