My fiancee's experience in the Navy (he served most of his time based out of Sasebo, Japan) is living proof. There are Fillipino's serving in the Navy, not Fillipino-Americans, but people born and raised in the Phillipines. I don't think this is an entirely new practice, but rather something that has existed for years. Perhaps serving in the U.S. military offers a better chance at gaining U.S. citizenship. In most cases, it offers a better life than what could be expected by staying at home. I think I read a newspaper article here locally, about younger people (late teens/early twenties) that lived in U.S. protectorates or territories such as Guam, American Samoa, Wake Island, etc, that wanted to join the military, despite the war in Iraq, because it offered so much more opportunity than staying in their home country.
