This isn't a new phenomenon. I'm not sure if you are old enough to remember when the Shah of Iran was deposed. The Aytollah (Head mullah) took over. Secular society overthrown by religious one.

Around the same time Cat Stevens was dragged home by his father and mullah's to reintroduce him to his faith. This is a man who wrote some of the most beautiful and inspirational music of the 70's. Remember Morning has Broken? I don't remember his real name but I can still see the picture of him "properly covered up" and surrounded by the clerics being hustled on the plane to home.
