Special Operations Forces

SOF--Okay, you gals really need to buy and read Waller's book Commandoes. It does an excellent job telling the tale. But, short answer..the AF does not have Commandoes, they have a special operations wing that specializes in aviation support to other SOF units. Though they have people they put on the ground "PJ"s and Forward air controllers (FAC) the majority of their effort is in special aircraft. Green Beret's and SEALs have overlapping mission sets but the GB evolved into unconventional warriors..hearts and minds, working with indiginous folks and SEALs focused more on direct action, close quarters combat and recon...so for instance, in Afg. each GB A team had a geographic area that they worked with the locals, we went eveywhere--anywhere..to do recon or swack people. If Delta existed, they would be a Unit specialized and hyper trained for one or two very specific high profile missions

and no matter how much I respect them, the Marines do not have a SOF unit.

And it is largely agreed that USSOCOM has become a fifth service and that special operations forces are independant of their service ties
