After Afghanistan

I took a real emotional dive. That is when I coined lost traumatic stress syndrome. (Dr Phil says if you name it you can cure it!) It was particularly hard to get excited about things--particularly the day to day events. So the standard psychology answer is to find something else to put that energy into, but it doesn't really work. Or I haven't been able to make it work well. Luckily I was away from the Teams and Combat (I was working in a Think Tank) for a year before I got out, so I could at least identify what was going on. So, I am now thinking that it comes in phases because it is pretty clear that I haven't made the transition yet (as some of my board members will attest to!) In my Leadership Consulting I talk about total committment. There is something incredibly powerful and soul changing about looking at the faces of your men and being so in tune and committed to the mission that the id, your personnel self and any fear or care about self disappears and the only thing remaining is the mission...a very hard act to follow.
