Seriously...having a 'mentor' really helps. They can tell you where the bodies are buried and where the landmines are. Also help integrate you into the already inplace structure so you're not having to reinvent the wheel. Makes it nice to introduce you around and help you remember names until you can make some new friends.
An individualized newbie packet containing some generic stuff of where things are, or how things work or who people are, but also personalized and job related (ie, measurable goals (small and large ones, what's expected for that position, things they would really like to see, things they would really NOT like to see.). Helps people find their place with the least amount of toe stepping possible and also gives them a secure and measurable list so they know if they're doing it right.
