Tom....this question is for you, please -

Posted by Cynthia (Tampa) on 1/26/2006, 21:53:05

My son (22) has enlisted in the Air Force (6 yr active/2 yr inactive). Last week we went to MEPS (Tampa) for the swearing in - very touching. Right now he's slated for Security Forces (leaves in April), but he's scheduled to take the Physical Ability Stamina Test (PAST) for PJ/Combat Control in about 7 weeks. He's a pretty athletic guy and works out regularly. Presently, he can accomplish the requirements for entrance to the training program such as swimming 25 meters under water with one breath, push-ups/pull-ups, etc....the only part of the test he's unable to complete now is the 1000 meter swim (in a pool w/somersault turns at the end of each lap). He must complete this swim within 26 minutes and cannot stop at all during the swim. He has taken a membership to the local Y and is practicing his swimming (of course) and also running for endurance. Given your experience/expertise, is there anything you might suggest that he focus on or add to his work-out to improve his endurance in the pool??? I would really appreciate your insight.
