Toasting the King if you're toasted

Erika, I thought I wouldn't be able to share this story but your story has - how should I put it - made me feel like all stories are possible! A favourite road trip tape in my family is David Niven's The Moon's A Balloon, read by Niven himself. One long ago night, when Niven is a new member of the officer corps there was a special formal dinner (and I don't have the book or tape in front of me so some details made be muddled) the wines were flowing freely - nay, copiously. As the evening wore on, more than one officer thought visiting the loo might be a good plan but alas, no one was allowed to leave until His Majesty's health had been drunk. A solution was at hand - an empty magnum bottle passed from, let's say pillar to post underneath the white table cloth. I fear I do not do justice to Sir David's delivery and I recommend the book: it's quite marvelous.

Janet
