Re: further

You know, I had a problem w/ the US invading, preemptively, b/c of the very idea that Saddam would get sympathy....and that other countries, like China or North Korea, real bad guys, would be able to cry fear of the US b/c of the military strike against Iraq. Saddam deserved no sympathy.

And I do struggle w/ whether the US should help all countries suffering under oppressive governments/dictatorships...or whether we should work on our own problems.

But is it wrong to help one country and not help another? Or are we now bound to help every oppressed country b/c we helped depose of Saddam?

And how do we define success? I know my husband came home from Iraq with the feeling that he made a difference...that his unit was successful in its mission. He helped the Iraqi people. He had Iraqi people weep in gratitude. He had Iraqi people beg him and his unit not to leave. He helped provide medical care for poor Iraqi civilians who would not have had medical attention AT ALL under Saddam. Does helping even a few make a success?

As for being in the military and taking the responsibility for another person's life seriously. I can tell you that these men and women take their responsibility to each other and their mission VERY seriously. There have been a number of military who have made wrong or inappropriate decisions, but those are few. I'm not saying all in the military are perfect b/c they're not, but almost all would die for each other. And would die for Iraqi people who only want to live as we do.
