Instinct or Habit? Raised in large family & in SoCA w/earthquakes ......

lived in LA burb went to HS built with new safety codes and experimental material in case of horrific distruction. (Structural material was all light weight and small high windows made of thick safety glass etc.) When I relocated to Sydney Australia and upon entering any building low rise and especially high rise - a lot of brick in Sydney -was always looking for exits and alternate escape strategies... I did not notice until on my 3rd or 4th visit to a client HQ in the Central Business District (CBD) an executive asked me why I seemed to really be checking out the floor we traveled to and route to the conference rooms.. it made me think ... and I answered him, "I always have at least 2 scenarios about how I will get out of a building or a plane, boat, car etc. or to what could be a safe area in case of earthquake, building collapse, fire etc. I realized that the brick buildings were really freaking me out more than I had noticed. He laughed and thought it was silly. (about a month or so later I remember there was an earthquake in a town 2 hours up the coast - Maitland where 5 people were killed in the collapsed structures.)

I still note my surroundings and what if in my mind - escape and evade or requirement to fight options or strategies on a low level. Except when I am with or responsible for children or in proximity to those that could possibly be in need perhaps physically weaker or challenged then my auto pilot noticeably raises. Weird, seems most of my bro's & sis's are the same and you can now see the same (instincts?) in the next generation of our family. Makes me think instinct.
