I've been carrying needles in an Altoids tin, and they've gone through 4 security screenings with no comment so far. Tape 'em under the folded rim if you're worried. You may have to use a bashed up safety razor to cut your thread, but hey. They've stopped being annoyed with my fold up (1" when compacted) screwdriver as well, thankfully, as I always forget to take it off my keys.
