Once a SEAL, always a SEAL. The term preferred would be "former SEAL" for someone no longer on the teams.
But it seems that Tom had the opportunity, for the most part, to get to do what he really wanted to. It just took getting around other people's lies - which may account for the jumping you mentioned.
