The chances of you plunging to your demise in an elevator are slim because they are held up with at least 5 cables so the chances of all 5 breaking at once are slim and also they have safety breaks too so there are lots of safeguard to prevent them from failing.
I've been stuck in elevators at work and discoverd that I'm closterfobic (didn't really think that I was). In our elevators we have 911 buttons so it hooked me up with rescue people but alas it took them over an hour to get me out.
LOL the one thing that I do now is make sure I don't have to go to the bathroom before I travel up and down on the dang things..
