machicolation? That's what I thought you also might have meant - "a "machicolation" is a narrow opening in turret or tower floors, used to drop boiling liquids or stones on attackers". My vision - and I'm glad I double-checked - was a fortified spot to shoot from but what you're describing is quite different.

Enjoyed the reading - too bad you're not on sabbatical or at some writer's retreat, devoting your time to finishing this book. I am certainly beginning to understand what it must have been like for New Yorkers more than a hundred years ago: waiting by the docks for the latest chapter of Dicken's current bestseller to arrive.
