The grenade launcher was probably an M-203—single shot mounted under an M-16 or the stand alone that looks like a big shotgun is a M-79. The automatic is a MK (Mark) 79.
I would tell your nephew to go with the Apache---attack helos are the hottest thing going, get a lot of use and are getting lots of R&D $$ thrown their way
