It does depend on the state. Federal law says you can own one provided it’s registered and signed off on by your local police chief, and the owner pays the extra tax, approximately $200.

However, some states – like here in CT – have assault weapons bans, which don’t allow ownership - unless you hold a special type of FFL (Federal Firearms Lic.) either class 10 or 11. State law trumps federal in that regard.

The Gun Control Act of ’68 banned machine gun ownership for civilians regarding full automatic weapons, though it was grandfathered in to those built/purchased prior to ’68…legally that is. I’m sure they can find them floating around but not registered.
