Juxtapose Bush's comments with remarks by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Posted by Janet W. on 10/5/2005, 19:49:59, in reply to "Thinking about avian flu pandemic fear flinging"
General Peter Pace, the new chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (a marine) was interviewed recently by James Brady in Parade magazine, 10-02-05, and these remarks really made me uncomfortable: "Our fellow citizens are right to expect our military will act during a disaster but to respect their civil rights at the same time. We must now absorb those lessons from Katrina." Is this the role of the military? Shouldn't an enormous shift in the way the military is deployed be decided by politicians (who in turn have to justify their policies to the electorate)? His remarks combined with those of President Bush about the avian flu just make me feel uneasy - like there's a cosmic shift going on and it's all happening under the radar. So thanks for posting Kristy. Janet
