I don't know if this is a good spot or not...

but you also need to keep this in mind: the Founders were educated snobs, simply put. If you look at the structure of the presidential election you will see that they didn't even think that the "common man" (i.e. white men, those allowed to vote) were "smart enough" to vote "correctly". That is why they dreamed up the Electoral College. It was basically a failsafe in case the actual vote went the wrong way according to those that were educated and "in the know". Everyone realizes that the electors in the presidential election can vote however they please and don't have to do anything based on the general election. The only reason it hasn't been changed is that the college hasn't yet gone against the general election, but it could at any time. It will only change when/if it happens.
