Laura, I read and LOVED Jarhead. Swofford's style can only be described as prose. He's a brilliant writer, and his beautiful style belies the difficult subject matter. I went through a myriad of emotions while reading the book, and at the end, mourned the loss of his innocence.
I didn't find it offensive, but some may feel it's not for the faint of heart.
