When I look back at the 70s, I'm ashamed of the way I lumped together the troops who were fighting and the people who were making the decisions about Vietnam. I was never rude to the soldiers but I never went out of my way to hear their stories, either.

With Iraq, even people who are opposed to the war seem appreciative of the work the soldiers (and sailors!) do. But is that enough? Are the services and jobs there when they return? We hear conflicting stories and the conflicts run down party lines: Reps saying the troops are valued and cared for; Dems saying they are inadequately protected and that veterans' services are stripped of funding. Hard to know what to believe.
